Sunday Roast Review: The Alwyne

The Alwyne is one of my favorite pubs in Highbury. The service can sometimes be slow, but who’s in a rush on sunday anyway. The laid back yet friendly attitude goes in hand with the somewhat bohemian atmosphere of this wonderful pub. Old couches paired off with mismatched coffee tables hug spinach green paint, while chalk boards with witty coloured scribblings lean against scuffed furniture and a slowly rotating selection of local art occupies the walls. There is also the option of sitting out in the wonderful conservatory area on the side of the pub, providing you can find a seat that is. The beer selection, in one word, is epic. Cider as well. In my opinion, this is one of the best places to spend a rainy sunday afternoon sunk deep in a sofa with a roast and a paper.

The roast itself is spot on. Giant massive cow leaps ahead of year ago, when the kitchen didn’t understand the meaning of hot food and insisted on serving the pork without crackling. These days expect a healthy serving of your meat or veg of choice, surounded by piles of carrots, neeps, cabbage, roast potatoes and (extra points for this one) excellent buttery mash, all covered in lashings of gravy, but garnished with a pretty standard yorkshire pud. I went for the pork, which was a little dry, but a generous serving with a good amount of very morish crackling. Lenny, down for the weekend from edinbro, had a monstrous portion of chicken arrive shortly after the pork, certainly the one to go for if you missed breakfast. Crispy roast spuds and mash are an unbeatable combo, and once en route to mouth with meat, gravy and some veg meant the entire plate was demolished in an instant. Combined with a paper and one of the numerous draughts available from the bar, it was a damn fine sunday afternoon. Food aside, I suppose I should mention our plates were warm on arrival and the cutlery was a bit cheap but did a job. All the usual condiments were there including apple sauce for the pig.

Sure, you could go fancier than the Alwyne. If you are looking to impress you could try the Albion, or even the Marquess Tavern to open the wallet even wider. But if you just want to relax, catch up with a mate and smash the pants off a decent sized, very well priced sunday roast then the Alwyne’s the place to do it.
